town located by the river Ganges in the Indian state of West Bengal. |

This
historically significant town,
Chinsurah, is the headquarter of Hooghly
District. The district of Hooghly is
located to the north-west of Calcutta.

Long before
Calcutta rose to prominence, Hooghly was a flourishing trade
centre, with Shaptagram functioning as Bengal's
main port since the 16th century. |

Chinsurah still retains some relics of its past
glory. The old buildings, churches and
graveyards are reminiscent of its mixed cultural
heritage, borrowed from generations of British,
Armenian, Portuguese and Dutch people. It also
has a large number of Islamic monuments. |

Chinsurah has a tropical climate. Although the monthly temperatures range from 16°C
to 33°C, maximum temperatures in Chinsurah often exceed 38°C. Summer is dominated
by strong southwesterly monsoon winds. Maximum rainfall occurs during the monsoon
in August. Moderate northwesterly to northeasterly winds prevails for most of the
year. Winters are comfortable with temperatures lying between 11 to 17°C. |
